Quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes QD-LEDs represent a form of light-emitting technology and are regarded like a next generation of display technology after the organic light-emitting diodes OLEDs display. The goal of this chapter is, firstly, to provide a historical prospective study of QD-LEDs applications in display and lighting technologies, secondly, to present the most recent improvements in this field, and finally, to discuss about some current directions in QD-LEDs research that concentrate on the realization of the next-generation displays and high-quality lighting with superior color gamut, higher efficiency, and high color rendering index. Quantum-dot Based Light-emitting Diodes. Quantum dots QDs have attracted interest in the fields of optical applications such as quantum computing, biological, and chemical applications. QDs are fluorophore nanocrystals whose excitation and emission is basically distinct than classical organic fluorophores [ 2 ]. The unique properties of QDs appear almost exclusively due to the size regime in which they exist [ 6 ].

A light-emitting diode LED is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes , releasing energy in the form of photons. The color of the light corresponding to the energy of the photons is determined by the energy required for electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. Appearing as practical electronic components in , the earliest LEDs emitted low-intensity infrared light. The first visible-light LEDs were of low intensity and limited to red. Modern LEDs are available across the visible , ultraviolet , and infrared wavelengths, with high light output. Early LEDs were often used as indicator lamps, replacing small incandescent bulbs, and in seven-segment displays.

In the area of controlled environment agriculture CEA , one of the most commonly discussed topics is that of lighting. The lighting system is generally the most expensive component of a CEA facility in terms of upfront costs as well as ongoing expenses electricity use as well as replacement lamps. Naturally, advances in lighting technology are of great interest to the CEA community for these very reasons. Light-emitting diodes LEDs are the most recent lighting technology to enter the CEA arena and have great potential to improve performance and reduce the overall cost of controlled environment lighting.
