What is LOD you ask? The Level of Development LOD framework addresses several issues that arise when a BIM is used as a communication or collaboration tool, that is, when someone other than the designer extracts information from it. During the design process, building systems and components progress from a vague conceptual idea to a precise description. In the past there has been no simple way to designate where a model element is along this path. In a model though, a generic component placed approximately can look exactly the same as a specific component located precisely, so we need something besides appearance to tell the difference.
Louis, MO. Previous attendees have overwhelmingly acclaimed this highly interactive full-day workshop as very helpful in translating the LOD Spec into more efficient workflows, clearer communications, less waste, and a more effective modeling effort. The LOD framework enables effective and accurate planning and tracking of several facets of the project delivery process. Our purpose built LOD models will enable you to gain better control over projects, streamline workflows and increase productivity. While both level of development and level of detail are abbreviated as LOD; they both mean different things. LOD where D stands for detail talks about the graphical details that are added to a model, however level of development is a measure of how seriously you take the information represented by a BIM element. The level of development is a reasonable concept developed by AIA where development refers to the level of certainty about an object.

Levels of Development / Levels of Detail / LOD explained
Is it level of development or detail? People seem to use it interchangeably. The confusion stems from the fact that the acronym LOD was originally used by Vicosoftware — a construction costing software company — to stand for Level of Detail. The company was one of the first to develop techniques for pricing directly from building information models, and used LOD to track how definitive price estimates were. The appearance of a BIM element is only one piece of information about that object, and usually the least important.
