About African dwarf frogs and eggs; repro. Sometimes you even hear the males croak. A good approach is to remove most of the eggs to something like a floating breeding trap, so you can see them more easily. Plastic turkey basters are great for this. As the days pass, remove any cloudy eggs.
Hi again! I have a dwarf frog that either has bloat or is pregnant. To my knowledge, my other frog is not a male! I don't want this little frog to suffer and don't know what to do for it! I'll be keeping my eye on it all night now, but it's acting normal! My poor guy was so bloated I barely had to stick him I didn't go in far, just enough to make a "hole" for the fluid to drain.
Do you have 2 frogs? A male and female is required to produce viable frog eggs. The female lays the eggs and the male fertilizes. To know if the frog is a male or not check behind its front legs search for a little white bump if one is there than its a boy. Thank you for your input on a thread that is over 2 years old.

African dwarf frogs are usually low-maintenance pets but they are still living creatures who can get a plethora of diseases. Dropsy, or bloat, is one of those diseases that most often affects African dwarf frogs. Dropsy can also affect may other frog species that are kept as pets. The word dropsy is technically another word for edema. If your exotics vet refers to frog dropsy as edema, hydropsy, bloat, or ascites, they are probably referencing the same thing. Dropsy also known as edema, hydropsy, ascites, bloat presents as severe bloating in your pet frog.

I got my daughter these for her birthday, and recently have noticed this one swelling around the belly. I'm not sure if it's bloated, getting fat or if she's pregnant Thank you for you help! Right now it is hard to tell. If she is acting normal, like eating, swimming, etc, then she might be pregnant. However if she is staying at the top, or acting strange, she is bloated. Keep an eye on her, and keep us posted!
African dwarf frogs and their keepers are each at risk from the other, especially when the keepers don't know or don't follow some simple, common-sense precautions about keeping amphibians. This page will talk bout those precautions and how keepers can keep both their frog and themselves healthy and safe. Let me start by saying that our frogs are actually a lot more at risk from us than we are from them. Certainly more ADFs have been killed due to neglect or inadequate care by their owners than the other way around. As with any pet, but especially a pet that lives in a glass tank, we create and control their whole world.
