The novel Rebecca begins at an undetermined point in the future. The narrator, who remains nameless, is travelling around Europe with an unidentified male companion. They move from city to city, from hotel to hotel, but cannot help remembering Manderley, a beautiful English estate that they have been forced to leave behind. The narrator alludes to the destruction of Manderley and the painful events that took place within its walls. She also vaguely refers to a few mysterious characters that will play significant roles over the course of the novel: Mrs. Danvers , Jack Favell , and Rebecca.

The novel is narrated by an unnamed woman recalling past events in her life. Throughout the course of the book, the narrator remembers the time she spent at Manderley , a large, handsome English estate, while married to Maxim de Winter. As a young woman, the narrator worked for a rich, obnoxious old woman named Mrs. One summer, the narrator and Van Hopper travel to Monte Carlo. There, Van Hopper makes a point of introducing herself to the charismatic Maxim de Winter, who, it is well-known, has just lost his beloved wife in a tragic boating accident. Although the narrator is shy, Maxim takes an immediate liking to her, and when Mrs. Van Hopper catches the flu, Maxim invites the narrator to drive through Monte Carlo with him.

Texts show us how experience often changes people. Throughout the engrossing story, the characters experience much and as a result, the characters undergo both temporary and life-altering changes to their thoughts, beliefs and behavior. In the beginning of the novel, the narrator is the insecure, shy and inexperienced paid companion of Mrs. Van Hopper. However, when she marries Maxim De Winter her life totally changes. She enters a new and unknown world as she becomes part of the elite class of society.

Rebecca 's narrative takes the form of a flashback. The heroine, who remains nameless, lives in Europe with her husband, Maxim de Winter, traveling from hotel to hotel, harboring memories of a beautiful home called Manderley, which, we learn, has been destroyed by fire. The story begins with her memories of how she and Maxim first met, in Monte Carlo, years before. In her flashback, the heroine is working as the young traveling companion to a wealthy American named Mrs. Van Hopper. In her flashback, Maxim is staying at the same hotel as the heroine and her employer, and after knowing the heroine for only a few weeks, he proposes marriage. She accepts, and he marries her and takes her back to his ancestral estate of Manderley.
