Despite how it may have seemed, Linkin Park 's breakout was not an overnight success. The band had their fair share of struggles before finally having things fall into place with the release of their monster debut album Hybrid Theory. The group's roots trace back to the high school friendship of Mike Shinoda , the band's rapping co-vocalist, and Brad Delson , the group's guitarist. Their influences were diverse, with Shinoda being a fan of hip-hop and Delson digging on the guitar work of heavier acts like Deftones and Guns N' Roses. But something just wasn't clicking and a hard decision had to be made to part ways with Wakefield. Around the same time, Farrell got another gig touring with a band called Tasty Snax, and it looked like the band had hit a major roadblock. Enter Jeff Blue, vice president of Zomba Music, who was aware of the group, felt they had something and helped them in their search for a new vocalist.

Hybrid Theory is Linkin Park's debut, self titled album. The album was a commercial success, having sold over 10 million units in the United States alone as of , peaking at number two on the Billboard , and also reaching high positions on other charts worldwide. Recorded at NRG Recordings in North Hollywood, California, and produced by Don Gilmore, the album's lyrical themes deal with problems lead vocalist Chester Bennington experienced during his adolescence, including drug abuse and the constant fighting and divorce of his parents. Hybrid Theory takes its title from the previous name of the band. Four singles were released from the album: " One Step Closer ", " Crawling ", " Papercut ", and " In the End ", all of them being responsible for launching Linkin Park into mainstream popularity. While the latter was the most successful of the four, all of the singles in the album remain some of the band's most successful songs to date. Although " Runaway ", " Points of Authority ", and " My December " from the special edition bonus disc album were not released as singles, they were minor hits on alternative rock radio stations thanks to the success of all of the band's singles and the album.

The album only peaked at 2 on the Billboard , but it would go on to become the best selling debut album of the 21st century. Vocalist Mark Wakefield left the band to pursue a different career as things weren't working out with Xero. Phoenix left the band around the same time to fulfill his commitment with Tasty Snax and was replaced by Kyle Christner. Some time after the EP was released, Kyle Christener was kicked out of the band. For three years, the band had been using their connections at Zomba to get the demos out to people who would listen to them [2] and were rejected by every major label and by a lot of independents as well, including by Clive Davis. That was exactly what we didn't want to do, and we stuck to our guns. We wrote the record we wanted to write," said Brad.

As of , the album has been certified diamond by the RIAA for sales in the band's home country of United States, with over eleven million units, peaking at number two on the US Billboard , and it also has reached high positions on other charts worldwide, with 30 million copies sold, making it the best-selling debut album since Guns N' Roses ' Appetite for Destruction and the best-selling rock album of the 21st century.
